Tours of Shipwrecks in Calabria, Southern Italy

Calabria is strategically located in the centre of the Mediterranean and is noted for its two seas, the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian, that come together amid the amazing scenery of the Strait of Messina. Thanks to the beauty and variety of its waters and the unrivalled quality of its sea and weather conditions, Calabria can meet the needs of the most demanding scuba divers. Situated along the route taken by the shipping convoys of the Second World War, the sea beds of the province of Reggio Calabria  reveal more than 20 historical wrecks, with many others still waiting to be explored! These wrecks, often well preserved, represent an important historical heritage as well as being tourist attractions and nature reserves. Comprising patrol boats, freighters, submarines, ferry boats and tankers, each of these wrecks, whether military or commercial, has its own story. Nowadays, 70 years after their sinking, all of the wrecks have become oases of biodiversity, hosting sponges, various species of coral, and colourful fish that take advantage of a well protected hiding place.
Even underwater, Calabria represents the perfect integration of archeological treasures, art and nature, just waiting to be explored by those who venture to its depths.

Diving week in Calabria “Wrecks & Reefs”

Our diving offer for a new proposal of underwater tourism in Calabria: the Megale Hellas Diving Center offers itinerant dives in the province of Reggio Calabria, at the southern tip of Italy, along the Ionian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Messina, visiting many fascinating shipwrecks of the Second World War sunk in the southern Ionian and the colorful walls and reefs of the Strait of Messina and of the Costa Viola (i.e. Violet Coast), as Scylla, considered one of the 10 most beautiful Italian reefs!
Our diving offer is a special holiday, which also satisfies the companions non-divers, who may come with us in the van for visiting the places where we’ll dive. And then, in the evening, we will organize some “typical” dinners with traditional Calabrian cuisine, visiting the medieval villages of the hinterland. For lovers of uncontaminated neture and wide landscapes, there’s the possibility to organize guided tours and hiking in the Aspromonte National Park.

Scuba Diving Courses SSI in Calabria, Southern Italy

Operating in scuba diving training for over 10 years, since 2017 the Megale Hellas Diving Center has also become a SSI Dive Center and a SSI Extended Range Center, with a certified staff for SSI recreational, technical and professional diving courses.
The Megale Hellas Diving staff is specialized in Deep Air Courses, which enable divers to dive within 50 or 60 m breathing air but with decompression stops with Nitrox, and in Trimix Courses, which enable to dive within 70 m with gases mixtures. The particular conformation of the Calabrian seabed, very deep already near the coast, makes fascinating achieving these patents, thanks to the presence of many cliffs, diving into the blue with their colors, and of numerous wrecks on which we carry out some of didactical dives.
Among the various specialties that the Diving Center offers, we point out the Wreck Dive Course, accessible also to Open Water Divers, thanks to the presence of wrecks within 18 m depth.
In addition to usual specialty’s courses – such as Prevention and Rescue, standard and advanced Nitrox, Deep (39 m), Orienteering, Dry Suits, Night Diving, Search and Recovery, Underwater Photography – we are also specialized in two areas, for which we carry out annually School Holiday Workshops: Marine Biology and Underwater Archaeology.
Let’s discover marine biology and underwater archaeology with us!
