Optimist

The Optimist has come a long way since its development; to the strict one-design racing boat it is to the current day. For children up to 15, the international optimist provides the perfect starter boat for beginners to competitive racers.

A huge amount of time and resources have gone into developing and fine tuning our optimist. With over 30 years’ experience building the highest quality racing and Olympic class boats, we have been able to use this to craft some of the highest quality and fastest optimists out there.

One of the key aspects to a good/fast optimist is its weight distribution. We’ve put a great deal of effort into having ours extensively swing tested, confirming that our optimist has unrivalled weight distribution. On top of this, our optimised N1 foils and fit-out have all been tried and tested to our high standards, assuring all our products have second to none quality.

Solution

The Solution is a hiking singlehander designed to provide exciting but manageable sailing for all sailors in the 65 to 85kg weight range. The boat was designed for sailors who were too light for a Phantom or a Finn but wanted more performance than that offered by some traditional classes. A lightweight epoxy hull powerful sail make the boat an offwind flyer, whilst the adjustable raking rig ensures  the boat is managable and refined whilst sailing upwind.

F15

The Flying 15 is a 2 person, planning keelboat sailed worldwide. The first F15 World Championships was held in 1979 and the last 2 have been won by our own Chris Turner sailing with Graham Vials at Hayling Island in 2011 and again in Hong Kong in 2013.

The boat has been modernised over the years with Uffa Fox agreeing to changes towards the end of his life to improve the deisgn specification and sail plan. In 2006 we designed and built a new deck mould to improve the ergonomics and simplify fit out and in 2012 we built another new mould and now offer a choice of non-slip on the foredeck. Most sailors choose to upgrade to having a carbon hull which makes the boat stiffer for longer.

Boats are supplied as finished hulls with or without keels for home fit out or completion by a small number of dealers - typically Pinnell & Bax or Phil Evans.

Background
Ovington Boats was founded by Dave Ovington in 1975. Dave started off building traditional wooden boats and in particular race winning Enterprises. With the search for lighter boats Dave progressed to using glass fibre and developed the application of vacuum bagged foam sandwich construction. Sadly, in March 2005 Dave died suddenly - but his legacy lives on in the business and the people who have worked at Ovington Boats for many years.
