Gibson Photo Underwaterhousing

The Gibson underwater housing was developed for consumer digital SLR camera models such as the Canon 650D or the Panasonic GH3. Since 2010 there is a smaller version of the housing for the the Panasonic GH2 or the Olympus OM-D. Since summer 2016, the case will be available in a new design as Gibson Mark2. This case is specially designed for the Sony A7M2 (also A7RM2 and A7SM2). Like all BS Kinetics camera housing, it is built using carbon fibre and epoxide resin, along with stainless steel, POM and saltwater-proof aluminium. These components can be used to make very light waterproof housing which can be used at a diving depth of up to 160m. Therefore, casing suitable for the purposes of technical divers can also be supplied. 

Ergonomics is of utmost importance to BS Kinetics in their underwater housing. For this reason, the shutter, focus and AV button can all be operated using the right hand without letting go of the casing. Additionally, BS Kinetics allows users to adjust the housing’s shutter release by pulling and turning according to their personal requirements. This means it can be used as either a thumb-operated or trigger-operated shutter. The protruding parts of the casing can be folded away during transport to avoid damage.

The desired image is selected using the zoom, which is operated with the left hand. The camera’s most important functions – speed, aperture, shutter release and zoom – can all be used quickly and easily. All other operations are carried out using buttons or triggers on the back or top of the housing.

The waterproof housing has a standard viewfinder, which scales down the picture marginally, showing around 90% of the actual picture. It is attached to the posterior side of the housing and can be rapidly interchanged between a 45° viewfinder from Inon and a 180° viewfinder from Nauticam or Inon.

The viewfinder is embedded in plexiglas, making it easy for the photographer to see. A soft, silicon O-Ring with an advantageously thick cross section operates as the housing’s main sealing mechanism. An elevated bridge at the anterior side positions the two halves of the housing securely, preventing water from flowing in when it is opened. It is fastened using a secure quick-release function. BS Kinetics supplies ports suitable for all types of lenses and objectives with its underwater housing.

The ports are fastened by means of a bayonet mount and are available in five standard sizes: Standard port, macro port, dome port, fish-eye and super fish-eye port. The ports can be adapted to diverse lenses by means of distance rings corresponding to each kind. The port windows are made of mineral glass (flat ports) or plexiglas (dome ports). Certain fish-eye ports are also available with a coated glass window.

The camera is inserted into the underwater housing and secured onto a stage. The flash signal is transmitted to the flash connector by means of an accessory shoe on the housing. BS Kinetics uses either Nikonos V or S6 (for Canon models) as its standard flash connectors. If desired, a second flash connector can be built into the housing, and the integration of a socalled Heinrichs converter is also possible. Fibre optic cables are also available as a new option for flash transmission, allowing an optic flash to be connected in production. Black fibre flocking on the interior walls guards against flare. This flocking also absorbs any condensation or small leakages that may occur due to sand on the O-ring.

Every single housing manufactured is tested to a standard immersion depth of 80 metres. As with all underwater housings made by BS Kinetics, the tested immersion depth can be increased to 160 metres, without any additional weight gain or change in geometry to the housing being required.

Takla Makan Video Underwaterhousing

The Takla Makan underwater housing for high-end cameras such as the Canon XF105 or the Sony FX7 was originally developed for the Canon XM1. Even with large housings the benefits of carbon fibre as a material work to advantage. Because of its low weight and high tensile strength, the entire housing weighs less than 5,8 kg with a diving depth of up to 160 meters. 

The low weight has been combined with an attractive yet practical design and professional features. One of the features of the underwater housing is a 3.6″, 16:9 display with an operating time of six hours, giving the photographer an optimum view from behind the lens at all times. The display is protected from water by the interchangeable port system, and the port can be adjusted accordingly when using ancillary lenses, which allows for images with crisp definition.

The camera is operated electronically using a remote control and mechanically using various controls, which can also be adapted, according to the customer’s requirements. Fitting the camera in the housing is achieved via a slide. The camera is screwed on to the slide and then pushed into the housing. The internal display is then connected to the camera’s AV output.

Another option available is the 3.5″ OLED. This is impressive because of its larger viewing angle and the reflection-free images it achieves in sunlight.

Because of its light-weight portability, high-powered video lighting systems can be used.

The need for bulky, unwieldy and buoyancy bodies falls away. Any residual positive buoyancy can be compensated for via a ballast system using standard ballasts, obviating the need for extra ballast which makes movement difficult. The underwater housing has a carrying handle which makes handling easier. We can incorporate custom-made extra features upon request.

One further option is connecting the video signal to a signal transmission device, for which the housing can have another display connected to it. The AV signal, the HD(SDI) signal, or the HDMI signal can then be transmitted via a network signal. Live broadcasts, stage directions and observation or surveillance functions can all be carried out in this way. (See the Live Broadcasts at the Eilat Photokina 2010 Fair.)

The underwater housing has three secured quick release latches for efficient opening and closing of the underwater housing. One main O-ring seals the two halves of the housing. Thanks to innovative lip design, this O-ring does not need to be greased.

Low maintenance involves simple cleaning with water, after which the underwater housing can be simply and safely closed again.

DuoDive 3D 3D Video Underwaterhousing

BS Kinetics, from Baden in Germany has developed DuoDive as a 3D underwater housing. It is compatible with all small (consumer) camcorders from SONY (all models with a LANC port or AV/R remote terminal jack) such as the CX760 or models with multiport like the PJ780 and all smaller versions of the Canon Camcorder with an inbuilt LANC terminal. This underwater housing helps you produce professional stereoscopic underwater images.
The carbon fibre housing has a net weight of 3.8 kg and measures 300*150*310 mm in size. It can accommodate a camera up to 200 mm long.

As with all underwater housings made by BS Kinetics, the front port is made of glass. A swivel-type red filter has been integrated into the port. When travelling, the port and the LED display are protected against scratching by a protective cover.

This housing comes with LANC controls especially developed for stereoscopic (3D) applications, which enables synchronous drive control of both camcorders. The housing is suitable for Sony and Canon camcorders which have an integrated LANC terminal (in the form of a 2.5 mm LANC jack or AV/R remote terminal jack found in all new SONY camcorders). This feature allows the flexibility of controlling different camcorders.

The controls enable complete menu navigation (for all SONY camcorders produced since January 2009). All camcorder functions can be accessed using cursor control (e.g. white balance, exposure, time lapse, and all camcorder settings). There is also an extra white balance button which functions with all SONY camcorders and has a MyMenu application feature.

A 3.6″ TFT colour display gives a preview of the shot. The display is battery-powered and lasts for up to 8 hours. The battery status icon is displayed on the LED and reminds the user in advance when to recharge. At the press of a button the display can switch between the images from the left and right cameras.

Another option available is the 3.5″ OLED. This is impressive because of its larger viewing angle and the reflection-free images it achieves in sunlight.

Fitting the camcorder into the underwater housing is very straightforward. It is fixed onto a plate with tripod screws. Moveable stops allow exact parallel alignment of the cameras. The plate and cameras are then inserted by pushing them into the housing, and fixed into position. If required, wide angle or macro converters can be fitted directly onto the camcorders inside the housing. This means that lenses cannot be changed under water.
