The province of Raja Ampat is Indonesia’s most easterly province and has earned its reputation as the world epicentre of marine biodiversity.

Heart of Biodiversity
Raja Ampat is an archipelago of over 1,500 small islands, including the four main islands of: Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo. Scientists have conducted several marine surveys in our area and their findings indicate that the marine life diversity here is the highest of any recorded on Earth. The variety of aquatic species, the variety and density of healthy vibrant corals and the abundance of fish has to be experienced to fully understand the importance of conserving the area.

Worldrecord house reef
Dr. Gerald R. Allen, internationally renowned Ichthyologist and author of more than 33 fish ID books conducted a survey on Cape Kri counting an amazing number of 374 different reef fish species. A significant increase of 91 species from his former Cape Kri survey 11 years earlier. This increase is evidence that our conservation work for over 20 years delivers results both in increased bio-diversity and improved health in our local eco-system.

No, nothing fishy about it!
Go dive and see it yourself: conveniently the record holding reef (Cape Kri) is right in front of Sorido Bay Resort so within seconds you can dive the best reef in the world.

Fluo Diving
A Brand New Science – A unique Dimension

Experience a new dimension in diving so new and exclusive that more people have seen earth from space than have seen corals in this totally new light!

Not only does Papua Diving have the most pristine reefs on the planet – and perhaps the only reefs on earth which are actually thriving, getting healthier, richer and more diverse each year – but now you can discover something so different and magical, that you will never see marine creatures the same way again. Taking you back to premier ocean discovery, we call it ” Fluo-Diving“.

A fluo dive will show you a side of a night dive you might never have dreamed possible. Corals, fish and other creatures will take on mysterious, otherworldly colours beneath the fluo dive lamps, quite literally becoming as different as night and day. Once you finally bring yourself to return to the surface, your view on the sea will be forever changed.

Just a few fin kicks of the shore and from the jetty you can discover the beauty of our reef.
There’s plenty of fantastic snorkelling around
Just off our Jetty you can see
  • Blue spotted stingrays
  • Blacktip reef sharks
  • Turtles
  • Scorpion- and Crocodile fish
  • Batfish and schools of Jackfish
  • School of Bumphead parrot Fish
Or how about a night snorkel – almost always you will meet the endemic Papuan Bamboo Shark (Epaulette Shark)

A very exciting thing to do is to snorkel with the Manta Rays.
Once a week we head out to encounter those gentle giants. If you like and space permits you can also join the dive boat to snorkel other places nearby. Therefore we offer special guided snorkelling packages. However not all dive sites are suitable for snorkelling though. We will advise which spots are suited for you and which are not.

If you love the ocean and like going bubble free
You might be interested in enrolling a PADI Free Diver course.
Free diving or breath-hold diving is the practice of making dives in the ocean on one breath. You think that’s crazy and you are not able to stay down long enough. The course will teach you to extend your breath holding capabilities. You will surprise yourself.

The peace, calm and quiet underwater without bulky and noisy equipment, is freedom itself and you won’t scare the wildlife either.

Dive & snorkel sites

We count more than 30 sites in closest proximity to the resorts.
Here is a pick of some our favourite dive sites.

Cape Kri
One of the favorite dives, Cape Kri is Sordio Bay’s house reef and less than 3 minute by boat from Kri Eco Resort. This is the dive site that put Raja Ampat on the map when Dr Gerry Allen smashed his record for total number of fish species on a single tank dive: 374 different species!

The world-record holding Cape Kri, with a record count of 374 different species in one dive counted by Dr. G. Allen, is just a 1 minute boat ride from our jetty. At the Northeast point of Kri island the currents sweep into a channel between Kri and the small island of Koh. At this point beneath waters churning in the current, huge schools of Big-eye trevallies, Barracudas and Snappers can be seen hanging over the drop-off. At the base of the reef at 38 meters an ancient snagged anchor rests next to a bommie with a dense school of Banded sweetlips. A large shallow coral garden crowns the reef top with blacktip reef sharks patrolling amongst the overlapping maze of hard corals with feeding hawksbill turtles. Car-sized Queensland groupers down to the diminutive ever-present pygmy seahorse can be seen on this phenomenal and always-surprising dive site! Dawn and dusk are feeding time so divers can experience this site at its awe-inspiring best.

Only 10 mins from Kri Island, this submerged reef with a reef top at 5 metres, contains a very high biomass, one of the highest in Raja Ampat.

Sardines reef is quite simply one of the best reef dives in the world, where divers witness the phenomenal diversity of Raja Ampat at full force. Where the current strikes this offshore reef and splits, a dazzling array of fish congregate, audibly swarming fusiliers spin above, pursued by huge giant trevallies, packs of Bluefin jacks and huge Spanish mackerels. Batfish gather in the hundreds, while multitudes of schooling bannerfish feed in the current. Grey reef sharks, blacktips and whitetips can also be seen along with the wobbegong waiting in ambush on the sea floor. Coral bommies dot the slope covered with many colourful species of dendronephya soft corals and up to three separate species of Pygmy seahorses can be found amongst them. On the current-swept reef top a resident school of thirty massive bumphead parrotfish crunch on the coral, keeping the divers company on a safety stop who hang from their reef-hooks like kites in the wind. Upon surfacing, many divers comment that this is the best dive they have ever done!! Photographers love this dive site and have to return to change from wide angle to macro!

Blue Magic
Only 15 mins from Kri Island, this small pinnacle has almost everything.

From Wobbegong sharks to tiny 2cm Denise Pygmy seahorses. The reef top is covered in hard coral with some big coral heads and some tabling Acropora corals well over 3 metres across. There is a resident school of Big eye Trevallies and many large Barracuda. Green Turtles can be found here as well as Black Tips, White Tips and the occasional Grey Reef Sharks. If you are very lucky even a Giant Manta Ray. The magnificent dive ends with a blue water safety stop drifting over and away from the reef.

Manta Sandy
Only 25 mins from Kri Island, this sandy slope is famous for it’s Manta Rays. It is a cleaning station where they come in to get cleaned.

If the many reefs are not enough this area also boasts some of the best manta diving in the world! There are two main manta sites just half an hour away. One, Manta Sandy, is a cleaning station where up to 10 mantas can be seen vying for a position above the two rocks where wrasses clean these giants. We get enormous 4 meter wide black mantas, looking like a negative photographic image, their gills are highlighted in white, along with the other more common white-bellied variety. Another site nearby, Manta Slope, mantas circle above in the sun while divers hook onto the reef while the current arcs overhead and down the steep slope below. Divers can be caught unaware while giant demonic-looking black mantas cruise by behind them. This trip is out of our 10km range, but is offered once a week without any fuel surcharges!

The Passage
As seen in many articles, including recently by David Doubilet in the Sept 2007 National Geographic, the passage is completely unique dive site. The narrow canyon 40 minutes away between Gam and Waigeo can be described as river flowing between the two Islands, but also a marine environment, a haven of peculiar and unique microhabitats.

This is a place where experienced divers and photographers enjoy the utterly different experience of diving in this truly one-of-a-kind location. Above water the sheer limestone cliffs make this a place where the sightseeing above water is also excessively beautiful. Guests combine this trip visiting the labyrinthine Hidden Bay, a maze of towering islets, and Kabui Bay where literally hundreds of mushroom islands create staggering scenery. This trip is out of our 10km range, but is offered once a week without any fuel surcharges!

For those that can’t get enough we do offer half/and full day excursions. You will get a true under and above water Raja Ampat experience. Not only will you get to dive but also discover remote islands and set foot on land for a picnic or some sightseeing.

Manta Point – Manta Sandy (Dive or Snorkeling)
If the many reefs are not enough this area also boasts with some of the best manta diving in the world! Manta Sandy is a cleaning station visited by reef mantas (Manta alfredi) that are vying for a position above the two rocks where wrasses clean these giants. We also get enormous 4 meter wide black reef mantas, looking like a negative photographic image, their gills are highlighted in white, along with the other more common white-bellied variety.

If the many reefs are not enough this area also boasts some of the best manta diving in the world!

Hidden Bay (Tour & Snorkeling)
Just 10 minutes away from The Passage lies a mangrove system of clear mirror-still blue water, where soft corals grow on the roots of mangrove trees. Rising above the foliage hornbills and parrots swoop between the trees. Hidden Bay is a complex network of interconnected water channels and lakes. Looking into the water one can spot huge chocolate chip sea stars laying between the seagrass that grows next to corals normally only seen on outer reefs.

The Passage (Dive or Snorkeling)
This utterly unique dive site, located 1 hour away from Kri Island, lies between the island of Gam and Waigeo. It can be described as river flowing between the two islands. The nutrient rich waters that are drawn through by the tides feed a vast wealth of marine biodiversity. Above water the sheer limestone cliffs make this a place excessively beautiful. There really is no other dive site in the world like this.

This is a place where experienced divers and photographers enjoy the superbly different experience of diving in this truly one-of-a-kind location.

Fam Island (Tour & Dive )
These islands are the very definition of paradise. White limestone cliffs plunge into the sea. Ultramarine blue lagoons are nestled next to monumental pinnacles and untouched beaches. There are many places that claim to be this beautiful, but this is the genuine article. Located about 1,5h boat ride from Kri Island, Fam Island has some of the most beautiful coral gardens and walls in Raja Ampat, combined with stunning viewpoints on land.

A fantastic place – both above and below- as you will be cruising along, discovering beaches or climbing little mountains.

Wai Island (Tour & Dive )
Just a 30 min boat ride from Kri Island, you will get to dive one of the few diveable wrecks in the area. It is a P47D fighter airplane (approx. length 15m) which crashed during World War II in 1944 and until today remains in perfect condition and shows excellent coral growth and marine life. Located on a slope that gently runs from Wai island it extends from 26 – 33 m depth.

A definite must-do for wreck lovers!

Batanta (Tour & Dive)
Batanta, the smallest of the “Four King”, is renowned to be the macro diving spot in Raja Ampat. Giving each diver an excellent opportunity for critter hunting. Lots of little freshwater channels carrying nutrients in and out of its bays, blended with a substrate of silt, mud, black sand, and all this mixed with a diversity of soft and hard corals. A perfect hiding place for all kinds of weird creatures. A wonderful waterfall is also waiting for you in the heart of the tropical forest. Many colorful butterflies in different sizes along with the sound of chirping birds are welcoming you during your way up to a 60 meter high and 25 meter wide fresh waterfall where you have the opportunity to have a refreshing swim.

A must for all true nature lovers!

This cruise is undertaken just before sunset or in the afternoon. You will visit a small neighbouring village by boat (30 min boat trip) followed by 30 minute hike to the birding location to see the endemic Red Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea rubra). There is a very good chance to see Hornbills (Aceros plicatus), Eclectus parrot (Eclectus rorartus) and other birds species as well. Don`t forget to bring binoculars and walking shoes!

A sure must-do for all bird and nature lovers.

About us

Company details

1 island, 2 resorts
Max Ammer, the founder of Papua Diving, first came to the region over 21 year ago following his passion to search for submerged World War II aircraft. After spending so much time in Raja Ampat Max fell in love with the Papuan people and started a number of initiatives to support the local Papuan communities. Papua Diving was one of the projects. It’s mission: to bring much needed money to the local people by enabling divers who had never heard of the region to be amazed by the wonders of the unspoiled aquatic world here.
