6LY400/440 Common-rail marine diesel engine

YANMAR has gone further than most marine diesel engine manufacturers to cut emissions of particulate matter and NOₓ (nitrogen oxides) as demanded under the latest EPA Tier 3 and EU RCD 2 regulations. While the majority of companies have replaced mechanical engine management with electronic control, and some have adapted automotive engines with cleaner and more efficient common-rail (CR) fuel induction for parts of their marine engine programs, YANMAR began upgrading its range with a clean sheet.

For more than 30 years, YANMAR has produced marine diesels that have consistently been among the cleanest and most efficient engines available on the boating market. Now, with ever-stricter international emissions rules in force, it has embarked on a program of systematically replacing single injectors with CR injection.

CR injects very finely atomized fuel to the engine cylinders to provide cleaner and more thorough combustion which results in markedly improved performance and better fuel economy with reduced emissions. YANMAR is the only manufacturer to offer a comprehensive range of digitally-controlled, CR-injected engines that from the outset have been specifically designed for marine applications. Unlike any other manufacturer, its CR engines start at 45 mhp (lower than the current EPA and RCD regulatory thresholds) and now continue almost uninterruptedly up to 440 mhp.

The new 6LY engine family (6LY400 & 6LY440) went into production at the beginning of this year and is the latest development in this program. In the strategically highly important 400-440 mhp power band sector the in-line six-cylinder engine has already established itself as class-leader with its high power-to-weight ratio, frugal fuel consumption and low emissions. Gone are the black smoke and unpleasant odor of incompletely combusted fuel on start-up and sustained low-load operation.

What YANMAR has retained with the new 6LY are the traditional values for which it has long been famed - outstandingly smooth, quiet running and legendary reliability. Although it's a new engine, it is at heart a very established one. The origins of 5.8-liter cylinder block go back three decades and four generations. This slim, light and compact unit has long been favored among the thousands of boat builders and service dealers that have installed and serviced them around the world.

But, along with CR injection and sophisticated electronic management, much else is new - from the completely new 24-valve cylinder head to the redesigned inlet and exhaust manifold for optimal engine breathing. Yet the engine footprint is virtually the same as that of its predecessor which makes it easy when it comes to replacing old engines for new, be they earlier YANMARs or the bulkier blocks of other manufacturers.

What also makes refitting even easier with the new is its plug-and-play connectivity. Not only can it be connected directly into vessel's multi-function display and control systems, it's also fitted for electronic vessel control systems. There's no problem, however, if owners prefer to keep their own cable throttles and gear shifts as YANMAR's potentiometers easily convert mechanical effort into electronic impulses.
