The Bestevaer designs
All the ships that we build in collaboration with Dykstra Naval Architects are launched under the name 'Bestevaer'. The Bestevaers are exclusively built by KM Yachtbuilders. The designs that have been built up to now vary in length (48 to 100 feet), lines and character. The Bestevaers either have a spoon bow (S), a clipper bow (C) or a straight bow (ST). The S Series consists of elegant performance yachts, while the C Series comprises robust yachts with plenty of space.
Gerard Dijkstra designed the Bestevaer 53 ST for his own use. KM Yachtbuilders are proud to be the elected builders of the architect's own yacht. This is how the ST Series was born. A Dykstra design stands for a performance sailing yacht: fast and comfortable.

Architect Gerard Dijkstra
Gerard Dijkstra is a naval architect who enjoys sailing races. As a navigator he sailed the Whitbread Around the World Race on the yacht 'Flyer' with skipper Conny van Rietschoten - and won the race. In 2005 he broke the transatlantic speed record on 'Windrose'. Furthermore, he is well-known for projects such as 'Athena', 'Maltese Falcon' and several J-Class yachts.

Best what?
Bestevaer was a nickname given to Michiel Adriaanszoon De Ruyter, one of the important Dutch admirals of the seventeenth century. The crew loved their captain and called him 'Beste Vaeder' (best father), which was then shortened to Bestevaer. The word Vaer also means sailor, seafarer. Thus, De Ruyter was not only the best father, but also the best seafarer. Bestevaer is a very fitting name.

Bestewind 50

The Bestewind 50 (50 feet, 14,96 m) is a real eye-catcher with robust, classical lines, a straight bow, an overhanging transom and a pilothouse. A fast and serious sailing yacht of a timeless and classical appearance, at an attractive price. She is designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and based on the Bestevaer II, Gerard Dykstra his own aluminium custom-built sailing yacht. The Bestewind is made of polyester.
The transom has a collapsible swimming platform and a gate which offers an easy way through to the cockpit. As all halyards are led aft from the mast, the deck remains uncluttered and neatly arranged. The Bestewind 50 is easily sailed by a couple.

The interior layout and finish reflect the eye for detail and commitment to quality that are the architect's and the builders' hallmarks. The space below deck is bright and roomy, with a combination of mahogany and off-white and an appealing traditional look. The pilothouse is a distinctive feature and contains the nav station and a seating arrangement with an uninterrupted view of the surroundings. This is ideal for watchkeeping on long passages, but also very pleasant when moored or at anchor.

The Bestewind 50 conforms to the highest quality requirements and belongs to the top-end market of series-built yachts. Naturally, she is built under the according quality certification, such as CE category A.

The design
All the ships that we build in collaboration with Van de Stadt Design are launched under the name 'Stadtship'. The Stadtships are exclusively built by KM Yachtbuilders.Van de Stadt Design create 'high performance' yachts without making any concessions regarding safety. Their designs are comfortable and easy to sail. Their spacious interiors, make them ideal blue-water cruisers. The yacht may be built with either a lift keel, a centreboard or a fixed keel.
The Stadtship 56 'Oester' features a lift keel which makes this a safe yacht for ocean sailing without having to give up mooring in a small inner harbour. It also allows for drying out on sand flats in tidal rivers and estuaries

About us

Company details

In 1999, KM Yachtbuilders acquired a yard with 30 years experience of building aluminum yachts. This valuable experience combined with the fresh air that Eeuwe Kooi, the new owner, brought with him, has made KM Yachtbuilders a young and innovative business.

KM Yachtbuilders specializes in the building and finishing of aluminum custom built sailing yachts. We also supply aluminum hulls for sailing and motor yachts up to thirty metres length. KM Yachtbuilders also build and maintain aluminium structures for onshore and offshore equipment. We build aluminium parts for Royal Huisman Shipyard and De Vries Feadship.

This market segment requires high quality standards. Our shipbuilders, carpenters and marine engineers have proved time and again that they can deliver the goods.

Our modern yard is located in the village of Makkum at the IJsselmeer. You can even reach us by boat! You are cordially invited to come and visit the yard. We would be more than happy to show you around.
