Activities for ocean lovers at the love your ocean zone
The focus of the love your ocean activity area is a 20-metre long replica of a sperm whale with headphones as a symbol for the theme island Sounds of the Sea.
Here, visitors can listen to sounds created during a Caribbean expedition and make clear what many people do not even know: fish also communicate with each other. The International Year of the Reef (IYOR) is the main focus of love your ocean 2018, where visitors to a large aquarium can dive with one of the first remote-controlled underwater drones.
Activities to join in
The visitors steer dry feet through a dead reef - the recordings are transmitted live on monitors and symbolize the sad sight, which is more and more often offered to marine explorers on the coral reefs of our earth. Especially children will be enthusiastic about the Sea Shepherd workshop. Here they can knead small sea animals from soap flake concentrate, which does not pollute the waters, and take them home. The Bracenet initiative produces bracelets from ghost nets, the proceeds of which are used to support marine conservation. On monitors, visitors are shown how and where these old fishing nets were salvaged from the sea. In the Research Cockpit, experienced and experienced scientists can work over the shoulders of their colleagues. The University of Bayreuth, for example, examines microplastic particles under the microscope. The Münster University of Applied Sciences presents its Smart Mirror, a multi-award-winning art installation on the theme island of innovation, which presents the consequences of its everyday activities to anyone who looks into it. On the island of Green Products, companies will be presenting sustainable product developments such as innovative boatbuilding materials made of flax fibre, cork or resins from renewable oil plants.
