The youngest of the Dutch provinces was only reclaimed from the sea in the 1960s. The land lying five meters below sea level on average has been made habitable by the Dutch art of poldering land and reclaiming it from the sea. It is characterized by one of the highest birth rates in Europe.
Surrounded by countless inland waterways
It is no surprise that many Dutch families are attracted into in the provincial capital Lelystad or to the border town of Muiden since both offer great recreational opportunities and particularly all sorts of watersports. Surrounded by various inland waterways, boaters can undertake trips into sheltered marginal seas like the Goimeer, Eemeer, Veluuwemeer or the Ketelmeer. On these you can even complete a full circumnavigation of Flevoland. In addition there is access to the bigger Markermeer and Ijseelmeer.
Modern marinas & charter options
Modern marinas like, for example, Marina Muiderzand measure up to even the greatest expectations. In addition to the extensive docking facilities, these marinas provide full service for boats as well as the crews. A supermarket for provisioning and a cozy cafe provide for all creature comforts. Many marinas also have different kinds of accomodation on offer. From chic appartments overlooking the marina to camping and caravaning sites offering complete freedom in the middle of nature. Local sailing schools like Amorgos in Muiderzand not only prepare newcomers for all sailing licenses, but also offer practical training and trips on the Ijsselmeer while charteryachts are on offer for the Markermeer.
