Essener Segelwoche - A regatta with long tradition in North Rhine-Westphalia
The Essener Segelwoche (Essen Sailing Week) on Lake Baldeney is the highlight of the regatta season for sailors in North Rhine-Westphalia. Of course, the commitment and competence of boot Düsseldorf cannot not be missed at this long established sailing event.
Traditionally, the Essener Segelwoche takes place over the first two weekends in September on the largest and most important watersports location in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lake Baldeney. The racing week was initiated in 1957 by the Essen Sailing Club and since 2009 it has been organized exclusively by the Regatta Association of Sailors at the Baldeneysee e.V. and includes several individual events.
Schedule crammed with events Up to 500 active sailors participate in the Essen Sailing Week every year, the main event being the open competitions which are organized annually as part of the official ranking series in various boat classes. But also the Essen City Cup (a yardstick regatta and the city championship for all classes), the Essen Optimist Cup (official regatta of the Opti-B and Opti-C series as well as Open BIC), the EU Cup for touring yachts and the Team Cup (Folkboat regatta of the Essen sailing clubs including guest and sponsor crews) are an essential and integral part of the Essen sailing week.
Simply a great Place for sailing Lake Baldeney is the largest and most important watersports centre in North Rhine-Westphalia. 2,300 sailors, 1,900 rowers and 2,300 canoeists are organized in more than 60 clubs around the lake. The local sailors organize about 35 regattas every season, including several national championships and more than 20 regattas as part of the national ranking series in various boat classes. For example, a total of 217 boats participated in the Essen Sailing Week alone in 2014.
Full schedule with various events on shore The regatta, which has existed since 1957, also offers an extensive supporting programme with many gastronomic highlights and live music on shore. On the western side of the lake, right next to the spectator stands for the races and in front of the backdrop of Villa Hügel, the once home of the Krupp family, a tent city is erected every year. Visitors can enjoy a perfect view of the action on the water as well as revel in the attractions on land.
