José Carreras International Yacht Race - benefitting the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation13/04/2012
The “José Carreras International Yacht Race”, to be held for the first time in August 2012, will benefit the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation. This high-calibre event is being organised and put on by BAVARIA YACHTBAU. The race will run from Mallorca to Ibiza and back. All classes of yachts are admitted to this charity regatta.
Help in the fight against leukaemia
Dr. Gabriele Kröner, CEO of the German José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation, said, “The idea was suggested to us during the preliminary activities for the ARD José Carreras Gala, and José Carreras was immediately enthusiastic. We are looking forward to this exciting event, and are glad to have a first-class partner for it with BAVARIA. Through the José Carreras International Yacht Race, we hope to expand the number of people who support us and donate to help in the fight against leukaemia.”
Gratitude for his recovery
In 1987, Spanish star tenor José Carreras had leukaemia himself. Thanks to the great skill of his doctors and new discoveries in medicine, he was able to defeat the disease. The support of family and friends was also important to him in getting through that difficult time. Out of gratitude for his recovery, in 1988 he founded the Fundación Internacional José Carreras para la lucha contra la leucemia, headquartered in Barcelona. In 1995 he set up the German José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation, headquartered in Munich. The German José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation successfully pursues the goal formulated by José Carreras: "Leukaemia must become curable. Every time, for everyone."
High-profile German and Spanish celebrities
The Ambassador Yachts, with high-profile German and Spanish celebrities, promise added interest. The celebs’ competitive interest is already so high that BAVARIA is holding a training camp just for this regatta. From April, 16th on a first group of celebrities will get trained on BAVARIA yachts in Palma de Mallorca and reach the official German Sportboat Licence “SBS”. For the first time ever the training and exams for this licence will be hold outside the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. A delegation from the Federal Ministry of Transport is travelling to Palma to execute the exam and hand out the licence to the participants!
