Volvo Ocean Race - Life at the extreme: a look back at 2011

02/01/2012

Only two months into the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 and already there has been an abundance of drama, incredible racing and both men and boats pushed to the absolute limit. Since the race started in Alicante on November 5 there have been two dismastings, one serious hull breach, two injured crewmen, three leg retirements, countless lead changes and some of the closest racing ever seen in the event.

2011 highlights video
Thanks to the total dedication and sheer skill of the sailing teams and their shore crews, race organisers, sponsors and partners, all six boats are still in the race as it heads into 2012. Watch this highlights video to remind yourselves what happened in the Volvo Ocean Race in 2011 – and why it is one of the toughest sporting events known to man.

Racing continues on January 4
On January 4 the five-boat Volvo Ocean Race fleet will complete the second stage of Leg 2 from Cape Town, South Africa, with a high speed, adrenaline packed sprint into Abu Dhabi, arriving in the city around 1600 local time (1200 UTC).
