Cummins MerCruiser Diesel introduces TDI series engines

CMD introduces the new TDI Series of marine engines – built by Volkswagen – available exclusively from CMD distributors and dealers and marketed under the CMD brand. The CMD TDI Series is the result of a long-term alliance between marine propulsion systems manufacturer Cummins MerCruiser Diesel and Volkswagen to co-develop marine engines below five liters.

Complying with future emission standards
Key to the alliance is the planned joint development of marine engines below five liters that will comply with future emissions standards. Volkswagen, a leading manufacturer of diesel engines up to 350 hp (258 kW), will manufacture the new CMD TDI Series engines at a state-of-the-art plant in Salzgitter, Germany. The EPA Tier 3 emissions standard will take effect in 2012 in the United States, and the RCD2 emissions standard takes effect in 2014 in Europe for this range of engines. The new standards prescribe significantly lower thresholds for emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other pollutants and require the development of next-generation diesel combustion technology.

Positive response
CMD has been talking to its customers around the globe since the agreement was announced, and according to David Dwight, CMD Vice President of Global Marketing, Sales and Integration, the response has been outstanding. “The response from our OEM and distributor customers has been positive,” he said. “They are all very excited about the TDI Series introduction for the next generation of emissions regulations. We believe that this agreement gives us a more complete lineup of engines with the opportunity to get in front of builders and consumers who have never used our products before.”

Broadest product offering in this range
“While we work through the development of the next generation of the product line over the next few years, adding the TDI series to CMD’s existing QSD product line enables us to offer the broadest product offering in this range. In effect, we will have seven engines in this range to offer our customers during this transition period.”
In connection with the agreement, the CMD distribution network, beginning Jan. 1, 2011, assumed responsibility for service and administration of warranty claims for engines previously sold under the Volkswagen Marine brand.
