Diving during the holidays

Holidaymaker’s demands for leisure activities have increased and more and more holiday organizers offer activities like dive courses and dive trips. There are holidays that feature diving only as a side activity and then there are so called dive vacations that revolve solely around diving. There are travel businesses specialized in these types of vacations and many of them exhibit at the world’s largest water sports trade fair boot Duesseldorf.

Dive destinations for novices
Beginners should resist the lure of exotic diving destinations since many of them are only suited for skilled divers. The deciding factors for beginners are

  • is the dive centre’s staff qualified to train beginners?
  • are local conditions appropriate for beginners, i.e. is there a training pool and clear water without current and with limited depth?
  • does the dive centre belong to an international organization and adheres to international training standards so that training certificates (brevets) can be issued?

Basic gear is needed
Many hotel complexes in popular diving regions have their own dive centres or cooperate with local centres. Be sure to check whether the dive offer is already included in the vacation price or which additional costs may arise. It is recommended to buy the basic gear, i.e. mask, snorkel and fins, before embarking on your first dive holiday.
