Travemuende Week 2010

boot Duesseldorf presents weather service

For the first time boot Duesseldorf – one of the main partners of the Travemuende Week – will present the weather service. The Travemuende Week (23 July to 1 August) will provide professional weather advice for all athletes on the water, as well as for the festival caterer and for the visitors. For the fifth time the world-renowned graduate meteorologist Dr Meeno Schrader from the company “WetterWelt” will outline the weather on- and off-shore every morning.

Weather forecast in German and English
Schrader already is somewhat like a luminary in the scene. He advises sailors in planning their cruise tour, he supports the world sailors on their record attempts around the globe and he also already supported the Olympic sailing medal hunt. Schrader and his colleague Ruediger Brandt will provide the weather service at the Travemuende Week via close telephone contact with the race committee. They will present the wind and weather forecast – both in German and English – every morning on a four-pager with a detailed look at the development during the race day.

Three-hour orbital forecast
“The forecast also includes a local weather map with a three-hour orbital forecast. That means we predict the wind conditions in the morning, midday and afternoon. We provide information about the course and the wind gusts developments, weather warnings, as well as air and water temperatures. Of course we will also provide a preview for the next day,” says Meeno Schrader. The prediction is differentiated according to the individual race tracks. This is an add-on since the Bay of Luebeck is known for its different wind and weather scenarios. “From the offshore course to the beach up to the surf areas directly in front of Travemuende the conditions can vary quite a bit”, says Schrader.

Permanent weather monitoring
The weather experts are confronted with three basic patterns in the Bay of Luebeck. For the Travemuende Week there might either be a high pressure scenario causing little to moderate thermal wind conditions, some thunderstorms which are of course particularly sensitive and challenging or the typical Westerlies. The Kiel-based company WetterWelt gives a permanent weather monitoring and keeps close contact to race director Walter Mielke whenever necessary. “Of course we have to manage a great deal of responsibility by handling this task for such a major event. But we are proud to do so,” says Schrader.
