Hobie Mirage Inflatable - foot-operated paddle propulsion

The Hobie Mirage Inflatable, a kayak manufactured from polyethylene, can be folded for transportation to the water’s edge, will fit into a car boot and can even be taken on board aircraft as sports luggage in transport containers fitted with rollers. Once assembled and placed on the water, the boat moves under foot-operated paddle power: Just like using a walking machine in a fitness suite, the operator steps alternately on two pedals to generate an up and down movement rather than the circular motion of a bicycle. These pedals are connected to two opposing paddles, the function of which imitates a penguin’s propulsion system. Two factors contribute to the excellent performance of the Mirage drive concept: Firstly, the reciprocating motion of the pedals, which are adjustable to suit all leg lengths and shoe sizes, and secondly the high level of efficiency attributable to fin-type paddles. These also operate effectively in shallow, wadeable waters.
