Southerly 32 - retracting keel

The new approx. 9.75m Southerly 32 is the first in the 10m class to feature a retracting keel. The currently highly popular 10m class had already been a source of considerable success for the British Northshore yard, a trend that is expected to continue with the advent of this latest model designed by Stephen Jones. It offers a good compromise in terms of space utilisation, safety and sporty performance with the retracting keel system combining the advantages of both minimal draft (when required) and high righting forces.

The latter ensure stability on the high sees, maintaining the legendary seakeeping properties for which all Southerlies are famed. This keel concept also enables the craft to be used on the shallow Wadden Sea, for example, without the danger of running aground or canting when falling dry. Hence Northshore has succeeded in combining an abundance of benefits – not just in its new 40-foot-plus models but also in its 10m class – with advanced design enhanced by the enduring quality associated with Britain’s largest sailing boat manufacturer.
