Boating and sailing knots

Figure (of) eight knot

The figure eight knot, a 'multi talent': easy to loosen, but non-skidding. Mostly used at the end of a leash to prevent a sheet or line from slipping through a block.



Just like the 'overhand knot' the figure eight knot begins with a loop: the bitter end lies above the standing end.


 
 


The running end is led underneath the standing part and put back through the bight.


 
 


The running part ends after the bight. This knot is an easy-to-untie and simple stopper knot.
